An online survey conducted among 1,000 French citizens aged 18-74, all of who take at least one holiday a year, was conducted by Arkenford on behalf of Visit Jersey in late 2015.  Respondents all lived in northern or north-western France.  Key findings include:

  • The French most typically holiday within France, with 89% of all holidays being domestic
  • Unlike many other markets, the French are just as likely to take a seven-night holiday starting and ending at the weekend as they are to take a weekend short-break
  • Beach holidays are the most commonly taken type of holiday, well ahead of city breaks and all-inclusive holidays
  • Visiting local markets, going out for a special meal and sunbathing are among the most popular activities undertaken on a holiday or short-break
  • The type of accommodation most preferred is self-catering or a 3-star chain hotel
  • When choosing accommodation, the French are keen to ensure that credit cards are accepted, there is secure parking and that there are nearby places to eat and drink
  • Facebook and YouTube are commonly used across all age groups, while almost 40% of those aged over 65 use no forms of social media
  • When asked about what had influenced destination choice of their most recent trip there was variation by age, but overall personal experience, recommendations of friends and relatives and websites promoting the destination were most commonly cited
  • Just more than one-in-five of the sample had visited Jersey at some point in the past
  • The most positive perceptions of Jersey were as a destination with attractive scenery and landscape, offering the opportunity of coastal and countryside walks and a chance to escape from the usual daily routine
  • By contrast the attributes for which Jersey was perceived least strongly were for having plenty of museums and galleries to visit, guaranteed fine weather and being able to get in the car and drive to the destination
  • When examining what it is that actually motivates the French to pick a destination the most important attributes are the attractiveness of the scenery and landscape, spending quality time with family and friends, that the destination offers good value for money, having lots of things to see and do and having the time to relax
