According to the newest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer (published in January 2022), international arrivals in 2021 fell by 1 billion (-72%) compared to 2019. This translates into a loss of approximately US$ 1 trillion in export revenues from international tourism. Europe fared comparatively better but was still 63% down on arrivals versus 2019. Prospects for 2022 are looking better, with growth trends forecast for domestic tourism, nature-based tourism and sustainable and authentic experiences.
