Pub Talks Become Walks

Jersey Heritage’s popular series of pub talks, Heritage on Tap, has been transformed into a series of walks this year to ensure it can continue under official guidelines surrounding the Coronavirus pandemic.

Heritage on Tap is part of the ‘What’s Your Street’s Story?’ programme of free talks, kindly sponsored by Benest & Syvret, and runs every September. Each talk usually attracts up to 100 people, who happily pack into a chosen pub to listen to Jersey Archive staff sharing stories about the history of the area. However, public events are still restricted to small numbers, which has led to the change in format.

Lucy Layton, Jersey Heritage’s Outreach Curator, said: “Heritage on Tap always proves to be a favourite with Islanders, who love to listen to stories of the area surrounding a particular pub – often an area they live in. We’ve been busy thinking about how we could keep the series going safely in the current situation and we think we’ve found the ideal solution with the self-guided walks, which start and end at a popular pub.”

The starting points for the walks are St. Mary’s Country Inn, The Dolphin in Gorey, The White Horse at Havre des Pas and the Old Court House in St. Aubin. Lucy said: “Each walk takes between 30-45 minutes and will lead people along leafy lanes in the heart of St. Mary, along the coast at Havre des Pas and around the picturesque harbours of St. Aubin and Gorey. There’s always the option of a pint in the pub, before or after the walk!”

Advocate Nina Benest, of Benest & Syvret, said: “We have been supporting Jersey Heritage with their free talks programme this year and have been impressed with how they have responded to the Coronavirus situation to ensure the talks are still available for people to enjoy in different ways. Developing Heritage on Tap into walking guides is a great way to continue this popular series of talks, while also creating a free resource for Islanders to use to get outside and rediscover their Island.”
