‘Going Once, Going Twice, Dead!’

The Trust attracts new audiences to 16 New Street with a site-specific murder-mystery

Expect high humour and even higher stakes at the Georgian House’s latest immersive production, a comedy murder-mystery where the audience become suspects.

Grab yourself a bidding paddle and leave your opera glasses at the door as you launch yourself into a live auction at 16 New Street! Destitute lawyer, Philippe Journeaux, has fallen on hard times and has no other option than to auction off the contents of his family home. As bidders assemble to claw over his priceless collection of fine art and antiques, bidding is cut short when a dead body is discovered. As bumbling detective Baptise Boivin arrives on the scene to investigate, members of the audience become suspects as Boivin attempts to unmask the murderer.

Based on a real-life auction that took place at 16 New Street in 1850, Going Once, Going Twice… Dead! is described as immersive theatre / murder mystery / live auction rolled into one.

The show is a collaboration between Butterfly Theatre’s Creative Producer, Carla-Marie Metcalfe, and Trust Museums Manager, Catherine Ward, who were keen to showcase as much of the historic building, and its contents, as possible when they were developing the script: ‘By performing the show “promenade-style” around the house, and including a live auction element, we hope to inspire audience members to participate, focusing greater attention on 16 New Street’s unique collection of furniture and artefacts.’

‘Immersive and awesome’; ‘an amazing experience’; ‘a superb drama in a wonderful setting’; ‘splendid and atmospheric’; ‘an amazing experience that brought local history to life’ – feedback from previous Butterfly shows at 16 New Street

‘Going Once, Going Twice, Dead!’ runs from Monday 28 March – Tuesday 5 April.

Early booking is recommended as previous Butterfly shows at 16 New Street have sold out.
