JPRestaurants Become First Restaurant Group in the UK & Channel Islands to Achieve Top Sustainability Award

Publish date: 19 Sep 2024

JPRestaurants, a family-owned local hospitality group, is proud to announce that it has both become the first restaurant group in the British Isles to be awarded a Gold Green Tourism Award, and that it has also achieved the Government of Jersey’s Eco-Active Leader Award, in recognition of its outstanding environmental practices. These accreditations reflect the group’s long-standing dedication to sustainability, responsible business practices, and support for the local community.

JPRestaurants, who operate three local restaurants —Jersey Crab Shack and Oyster Box in St Brelade’s Bay, and Banjo in St Helier—alongside hotel rooms at 8 Beresford Street, and Café Ubé in town and at Jersey’s ports, has embedded eco-friendly initiatives throughout its operations. From championing local produce and sourcing sustainable ingredients, to prioritising low-carbon energy sources and upgrading to energy-efficient appliances, the restaurant group has made significant strides in reducing its environmental footprint.

“As a local family business, supporting our Island environment, our team, and the Jersey community has always been central to JPRestaurants’ ethos,” said Dominic Jones, CEO of JPRestaurants. “We want to do the right thing for our People and our Island, and to create experiences that are good for our customers, good for our team, and good for Jersey. Receiving the Gold Green Tourism Award, and the Eco-Active Leader Award highlights our efforts, and we’re delighted to have received formal recognition of our commitment to Sustainability. Being the first restaurant group to reach Gold level is such an achievement, and I’m extremely proud of our team who have helped us to become leaders in Sustainability among UK Hospitality.”

Dominic also highlighted the importance of sustainable hospitality for the Island community. “We have so many environmentally-conscious customers, visitors, and businesses in the Island. Providing greener ways to enjoy Jersey is essential to attract those who want to travel, visit attractions, dine out, and do business in the Island, without a negative impact on the planet. We hope this accreditation will encourage both environmentally-aware islanders, as well as tourists and businesses wishing to meet their ESG targets, to choose to dine or stay with us and other accredited local businesses.”

The Gold Green Tourism Award, presented by the national body Green Tourism, is a globally-recognised sustainability accreditation, and the highest possible rating awarded to only the most sustainable businesses in the travel, tourism, and hospitality sectors. As well as environmental initiatives, the Award also considers a business’ commitment to its local community, its employees, and its customers, taking into account different sustainability targets across People, Places and Planet.

David McDonald, Sustainable Tourism Assessor at Green Tourism, commended JPRestaurants, highlighting in particular the group’s commitment to promoting locally and sustainably produced food, and to promoting Jersey as a visitor destination to enjoy responsibly. David said, “The JPRestaurants team has displayed an excellent understanding of sustainability and awareness of opportunities and challenges associated with running a responsible business, and should be very proud of their hard work.”

In addition to the Green Tourism Award, JPRestaurants has also recently achieved the Government of Jersey Eco-Active Leader Award, granted by Eco-Active, a local Government initiative recognising environmentally-conscious businesses in Jersey. This award further highlights JPRestaurants’ leadership in promoting sustainability within the local community.

JPRestaurants is committed to continuing its Sustainability journey. Over the coming months, the group plans to assess the carbon footprint of each of its dishes to identify opportunities to adjust more carbon-intensive dishes, and to help environmentally-conscious customers to choose more environmentally-friendly foods.
