New Geowalks launched for 2023

The Aspiring Jersey Island Geopark have launched their new batch of Geowalks for 2023 and you’re in for a real treat!

These events are guided walks that celebrate all things ‘Geo’ about our island – everything from the rocks beneath your feet to the special wildlife to Jersey’s unique culture!

There is a 50% discount for Members of Jersey Heritage, Société Jersiaise or National Trust for Jersey – just click the blue promo code and add AJIG2023 at the checkout. Please bring proof of Membership to the Geowalk.

St. Ouen in Jersey

Geowalk: Discover the Neanderthal hunting cave, La Cotte à la Chèvre

Join us for a guided Geowalk to La Cotte à la Chèvre, the Neanderthal hunting cave. Meet at Grosnez in the car park for a scramble down to La Cotte a la Chèvre. You will take the footpath towards Plémont then find your way down through the bracken and across the rocks to the Neanderthal hunting cave. The artefacts from the cave have recently been re-examined by Dr Josie Mills. The route to the cave is challenging and steep in places, only recommended for those who have a head for heights.

Geowalk: The Mont-à-l’Abbé Landscape

Discover how the geology in rural St Helier determines the landscape of valleys, uplands and ancient route ways . Learn how the environmental impact of the Ice Age lead to the formation of the soil which contributes so much to the Island’s agriculture. Visit a working dairy farm whilst enjoying this fascinating Geowalk.

Geowalk: Discover the Gorselands

Journey along the scenic cliff paths from Corbière with its iconic lighthouse and stories of shipwrecks. Meander through the old quarry workings at La Moye, past the desalination plant to Beauport where you will get amazing views across to La Cotte de St Brelade. The return will be through the country park and back along the railway walk. Find out more about how the unique geology and biodiversity of this area has influenced past land uses.

Geowalk: La Pulente and the Ormering Tide

From Neolithic farmers to Viking raiders, Medieval shipwrecks to WW2 defences, surfers to tourists, this  south-west corner of St Ouen’s Bay is rich in heritage. Join us on this Geowalk to discover why La Pulente and the Ormering Tide provide inspiration to environmentalists, artists and holiday makers .

Geowalk: Discover Plémont

Explore the rock pools and beach caves to discover the history of the granite rocks and many intrusions and fault lines which cut through the Bay. Experience a guided geowalk through the tectonic history of the Island and also a route followed by many Victorian and Edwardian tourists who came to the Bay to be impressed by the wildness of the nature to be found there.
