Last April, it was with great sadness and shock that we at Art in the Frame Foundation, the managing charity of The Harbour Gallery Jersey at St Aubin, learned of the death of one of our earliest supporters Peter Knight.
To celebrate and commemorate the work of this fantastic artist, Art in the Frame Foundation is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition ‘Peter Knight’s Legacy Exhibition’, running from 11th April to 12th May.
Featuring a varied mix of Peter’s work over the years showing his development of style and subject matter, his three granddaughters Arabella, Chrissie and Anya are also exhibiting a piece of work each.
Art in the Frame Foundation was set up 21 years ago this year and The Harbour Gallery 16 years ago. Peter was there for us not only as an artist but in an advisory capacity. For 20 years, he helped to introduce us to up and coming artists, hang exhibitions, exhibit his own work in solo and group exhibitions, been a good customer by supporting the artists and he and his wife Mel became good friends.
Pat Robson, charity chairman and gallery director says “It was always a pleasure to come into the gallery on a grey day, to stand by the desk and look up to the ‘sunny’ colourful prints and paintings on the wall with their geometric shapes and straight lines, instantly recognisable as a work of art by Peter Knight.
I first met Peter when I did a term of Supply Teaching at Grainville School, about 30 years ago. The Art Department was an oasis of creative activity with Peter, a very inspirational teacher ‘at the helm’. I so enjoyed going in to see the work that the students were producing.
Peter concentrated on local landscapes and seascapes, in sunrise colours many in sunset colours. These normally would also contain a Jersey icon. He loved St Ouen’s bay, sunsets in hot oranges would silhouette La Rocco Tower or Corbiere Light House and often the little White House.”
The exhibition opening evening is taking place on Thursday 11th April, 6.30pm - 8.30pm, at The Harbour Gallery Jersey in St Aubin and will be officially opened at 7pm by His Excellency Sir Stephen Dalton. The evening will feature a welcome by Les Norman, lifelong friend of Peter and recollections of Peter by each of his 3 sons, Tim, Martin and Jono. Refreshments will be provided and a raffle will be held with all monies raised going straight to Art in the Frame Foundation.
The exhibition continues until Sunday 12th May.
The Harbour Gallery Jersey is open 7 days a week 10.00am - 5.30pm, parking is available along The Bulwarks or at the public car parks next to The Yacht Club and the Parish Hall.
