The Atlantic Hotel Achieves EarthCheck Bronze Certification

Publish date: 14 Feb 2023

Jersey’s Atlantic Hotel and Ocean Restaurant is proud to announce that it has become a member of EarthCheck, the world’s leading certification, consulting and advisory group for luxury travel and tourism organisations, and has achieved Benchmarked Bronze Status.

This is the first stage in the hotel’s ongoing journey with EarthCheck, a programme that sees businesses work through bronze, silver, gold and platinum certification and eventually become an EarthCheck Master. The Benchmarked Bronze Status recognises an organisation’s commitment to measure and monitor its sustainability performance. The subsequent certification levels recognise the commitment to manage and improve upon the benchmarked level.

Patrick Burke, Owner and Managing Director said:

“Although we are just starting out on our journey towards becoming a more sustainable hotel, the Benchmarked Bronze Status is a huge achievement in itself. It has taken us the best part of a year, working with local sustainability expert, Sheena Brockie, to examine, record and report on just about every process that takes place in the hotel which was not a simple task.”

“The whole team at The Atlantic is on this journey with us. Every member of staff is offered sustainability training and a Green Team has been formed to meet regularly to discuss new ideas and be champions of sustainable practices within the hotel.”

“We are very aware that it is Jersey’s environmental and cultural assets that attract visitors to the island and these need to be protected and responsibly managed. Jersey’s visitor economy and its operators are going to be key to driving change and we’re committed to playing our part.”

As well as working through the EarthCheck programme, The Atlantic Hotel has already begun to implement more sustainable practices. Amongst them the use of local suppliers and producers wherever possible, processes for sorting and recycling waste and reducing the amount of printed material, such as newspapers, in favour of online resources.

Guests are also encouraged to play their part by choosing not to have linen changed daily, hiring an e-bike instead of a car or picking up a walking map of the local area and exploring the neighbouring Jersey National Park.

Stewart Moore, CEO and Founder of EarthCheck, said:

“The Atlantic Hotel has taken a significant leadership position in sustainability. I would like to congratulate the whole team on their achievement. The hotel is a valued member of a global group of tourism operators who dare to make a difference.”

“By working with EarthCheck, The Atlantic Hotel has joined other industry leaders who are taking meaningful steps towards resolving some of the very real issues that face the planet.”
