The Atlantic Hotel Achieves EarthCheck Silver Certification

Publish date: 01 Feb 2024

Jersey’s Atlantic Hotel and Ocean Restaurant is proud to announce that it has achieved Silver Certification as a member of EarthCheck, the world’s leading business advisory group specialising in sustainability and destination management for the travel and tourism industry.

This is the second stage in the hotel’s ongoing journey with EarthCheck, a programme that sees businesses work through bronze, silver, gold and platinum certification and eventually become an EarthCheck Master. The Atlantic is the only hotel in the Channel Islands and one of the first ten hotels in the British Isles to achieve silver status with EarthCheck.

Patrick Burke, Owner and Managing Director said:

“Although in many ways we are still just starting out on our journey towards becoming a more sustainable business, attaining Silver Status is a huge achievement for our team. It has taken us the best part of two years, working with local sustainability expert, Sheena Brockie, to examine, record and report on just about every process that takes place in the hotel which is not a simple task. This culminated in a rigorous inspection by an EarthCheck auditor prior to the award being given.”

“We are very aware that it is Jersey’s environmental and cultural assets that attract visitors to the island and that these need to be protected and responsibly managed. Jersey’s visitor economy and its operators are going to be key to driving change and we’re committed to playing our part.”

As well as working through the EarthCheck programme, The Atlantic Hotel has implemented more sustainable practices. Amongst them the use of local suppliers and producers wherever possible, processes for sorting and recycling waste and reducing the amount of printed material, such as newspapers, in favour of digital resources.

Mr Burke added “We know that many of our guests are looking for ways in which they can travel more sustainably and last summer we became the first hotel in Jersey to join Durrell’s Rewild Carbon scheme. Focused on rewilding threatened ecosystems, their current project is located in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil. In supporting Rewild Carbon our guests are given the opportunity to compensate for their share of the carbon emissions that the hotel produces during their stay.”

Stewart Moore, CEO and Founder of EarthCheck, said:

“The Atlantic Hotel has taken a significant leadership position in sustainability. I would like to congratulate the whole team on their achievement. The hotel is a valued member of a global group of tourism operators who dare to make a difference.”

“By working with EarthCheck, The Atlantic has joined other industry leaders who are taking meaningful steps towards resolving some of the very real issues that face the planet.”
