Jersey Surf Film Festival 2023

Publish date: 30 Aug 2023

The Jersey Surf Film Festival will be hosting a drive-in car park cinema at the Watersplash on Saturday 9th September 2023.

The Jersey Surf Film Festival is a celebration of Jersey’s unique surf culture, community and natural environment. WE screen films from around the world and local films about ocean culture. We will be screening the winner of the short film competition on thebig screen and then the Jersey premiere of the surfing documentary feature film POINT OF CHANGE. This film is made by local filmmaker Rebecca Coley and has many local contributors. The Observatory were involved in making the graphics for the film. Peter Taylor Fitch created some additional animations. Chris Scott and Fred Mayer did compositing visual effects. Luke Hosty filmed some of the drone footage, Ben Jacquier created the sound effects. The animation house were EDDY TV in Paris and it is now beginning it’s film festival tour.

Th Festival will be an ‘ocean positive’ event working with SeaTrees to achieve this – this means that by using ‘blue carbon’ the organisers’ partners SeaTrees will plant sea trees (mangroves etc) that will more than offset the carbon created by the event. https://sea-trees.org/

The films:
The winner of the short film competition will screen amongst some other short films playing before the main premiere film.
The premiere film is called ‘Point of Change’ and is about the ‘discovery’ of a perfect wave on Nias Island, Indonesia in the 1970s.

Stumbling across the perfect wave, two surfers start a chain reaction of unintended consequences…

An island community dramatically changed forever by the discovery of the perfect wave in the 1970’s, POINT OF CHANGE chronicles the first surfers to ‘discover’ this Point at Nias Island, Indonesia, and the unintended dramatic consequences that followed… Finding perfection comes at a price.
