Plans revealed to launch the Cherry Godfrey Cup

Publish date: 07 Aug 2024

Cherry Godfrey, an independent financial services company, alongside local Football Associations across the islands, reveals its exciting plans to launch the Cherry Godfrey Cup – the very first four island women’s football tournament.

Bringing together the teams from Guernsey, Jersey, Isle of Man and Isle of Wight, they will battle it out over a 2-day tournament for the coveted title of Cherry Godfrey Cup winners. The tournament will be held every two years, with the first being held on 23rd and 24th August 2024 at Springfield, the football stadium in this year’s host island – Jersey.

Cherry Godfrey are working closely with the local FAs, football teams and media across all jurisdictions on this fantastic opportunity to further elevate women’s football across the Islands and their local communities. This tournament is an amazing opportunity to showcase the array of female footballing talent across the Islands. Everyone involved can’t wait to see which Island will be champions for the very first time!

Tanzy Cherry, Chief Operating Officer at Cherry Godfrey, commented, “It was only a few months ago that we were discussing with the Guernsey FA how we could support women’s football within the islands. As far as we knew, there wasn’t a significant tournament outside of the Island Games that gave the teams the opportunity to showcase the incredible talent within the islands.  To be able to officially launch the Cherry Godfrey Cup resulting from that conversation is a huge achievement. Both the team and I couldn’t be prouder to be sharing the news with everyone across the islands.

A massive thank you to all the FAs for their support – with particular mentions to Gary Roberts at Guernsey FA and Tony Vance, Guernsey FC Manager & Club Director, for helping us get this off the ground, and to the Jersey FA for agreeing to be the very first host Island. We are all very excited for what we believe is set to become an iconic event for many years to come”.

Jonathan Le Fondre, Football Services Manager of the Jersey Football Association, commented: “We’re delighted to be hosting the inaugural Cherry Godfrey Cup at Springfield Stadium and looking forward to welcoming all supporters, sponsors and our friends from Guernsey, Isle of Man and Isle of Wight. It was clear from our discussions with Cherry Godfrey, that they are extremely passionate about women’s football in the islands and the launch of this tournament next month will build upon the fantastic growth of the women’s game.”

Who will lift the Cherry Godfrey Cup in victory? Play-offs will be held on Friday 23rd August. The 3rd/4th place match will be played in the morning of Saturday 24th August, concluding with the big final in the afternoon at 3pm. Watch this space for more information and the live draw of the fixtures closer to the time. Entry to all matches will be free of charge, so put the date in your diaries and get together with colleagues, family, friends and children… and come along. Enjoy watching some superb football, support your local team and celebrate the bank holiday weekend whist cheering the teams on!

There are very limited sponsorship opportunities and tables available to be purchased for attendance at the Gala Lunch, so any potential corporate sponsors are encouraged to get in contact as soon as possible by emailing [email protected] to register your interest.
