Ports of Jersey takes to the airwaves during Maritime Safety Week

Ports of Jersey is taking part in Maritime Safety Week 2021, which takes place between Monday 05 and Saturday 10 July. This annual national awareness campaign aims to recognise excellent safety initiatives across the maritime sector, the sharing of knowledge and best practice, as well as delivering key safety messages.

As part of Ports of Jersey’s participation in the programme, staff from Jersey Coastguard are sharing safety videos and podcasts throughout the week, culminating in a two-day public roadshow to highlight a series of sea safety messages specifically aimed at local mariners and water users.

Ports of Jersey has specifically chosen this week to launch its inaugural Podcast channel and will be broadcasting three special episodes to highlight maritime safety. This will include an interview with two of our Coastguards giving some general advice for anyone taking to the water this summer. Another will see celebrated local swimmer, Sally Minty-Gravett MBE who will be sharing her wisdom and advice for those thinking of taking up the challenges of sea swimming, which has become increasingly popular for many islanders during recent months. The third Podcast will feature Margaret Jeffery, who will be appearing alongside Stephanie Trotter OBE, President and Director of UK charity CO-Gas Safety, on the dangers of carbon monoxide. Tragically, Margaret’s husband Ken died of carbon monoxide poisoning on board his boat in Jersey in February 2017, and since then she has been campaigning to raise awareness of the dangers.

Maritime Safety Week was also selected as the perfect platform to launch ‘Trace’, a new free web app created by the team at Jersey Coastguard. This is a simple way to submit the transit reports, something anyone taking to the sea is asked to do, as an alternative option to calling Jersey Coastguard over VHF radio.

Bjorn Risebrow, Manager of Maritime Operations Centre, explains, “One of our Jersey Coastguard officers, Andrew, has done a fantastic job in creating this web app, which has already been successfully trialled by many of our commercial operators. This app has huge potential, with enormous benefits already available for both the user and Jersey Coastguard. It includes a range of useful tools and safety reminders not only for mariners, but anyone heading out to sea, including kayakers and paddle boarders.

“We’re still here at all times for the mariner of course and will always welcome VHF calls, but Trace will provide an enhanced digital offering, which improves safety awareness, aids with planning and improves situational awareness for the Coastguard Team.”

On Friday 09 and Saturday 10 July a public roadshow is being held adjacent to St Helier’s Steam Clock, with representatives from across Ports of Jersey, including coastguard officers, Jersey Harbours and Jersey Marinas on hand to provide further guidance and assistance to anyone seeking it. The roadshows take place between 10am and 3pm and will include demonstrations and competitions. On Friday, the Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting Service are planning to attend, demonstrating the use of fire blankets and using C02 extinguishing media on their portable gas fire whilst Saturday should see officers from the Jersey Fire and Rescue Service, who will be bringing their inshore craft and offering maritime safety advice. Mrs Jeffery will also be on hand on both days to provide advice on ways to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.

Robin Fitzgerald, St Helier Harbour Operations and Security Manager for Ports of Jersey, has been co-ordinating plans for the week. He said, “We work hard all year round to keep people safe on the sea, as we’re aware of the significant risks posed by the marine environment. We’re continually looking at new ways to share important safety advice and hope that the events and activities we have planned for Maritime Safety Week will go down well.”
