The Durrell Challenge 2020 - Event Update

Further to the Government of Jersey’s update on Friday 7 August with regard to the Public Health Department’s policy for mass gatherings and events in Level 1 of Jersey’s Safe Exit Framework, we wanted to share an update regarding the Durrell Challenge that is due to take place on Sunday 27 September 2020.

In the above forementioned update, there has sadly been no relaxation in the numbers of people that are permitted to attend a mass gathering or event, which means we need to significantly reduce the size of the event. In addition, there have been further restrictions placed on events with regards to welcoming visitors from overseas. Therefore, we have taken the extremely difficult decision to announce that all runners (including VIP runners) who are not residents of Jersey, will be automatically transferred into the Virtual Durrell Challenge 13K in 2020.

All overseas runners who have been transferred to the Virtual Challenge in 2020 will also receive a £10 discount on entries into the event in Jersey in 2021, which is scheduled to take place on Sunday 23 May next year. We will provide further details in the coming weeks.

Durrell challenge

For local runners (Jersey residents only), we can confirm that we will be staging the 13K road race on Sunday 27 September*, where we will adapt the event to ensure that we comply with the Government of Jersey’s Level 1 restrictions that are currently in place.

This means that we will operate a much smaller event overall, that will include a number of precautions to ensure that we mitigate any risk associated with the spread of COVID-19. Importantly, this means that we will operate a limited number of runner waves with a maximum capacity of 40 runners. Each wave will be treated as a separate event, split into 30-minute intervals.

Within the next few weeks, we will be contacting all runners in Jersey who have registered for the race to update them on all areas of the event, including allocating wave starts to runners, which will be dependent on their predicted finish time.

We would like to thank all of our runners for their continued support and understanding during this difficult time. Durrell’s work protecting threatened wildlife has never been more vital. Together, with your help, we can ensure a wilder, healthier, more colourful world for us all.
