Trends in domestic overnight tourism in England - July 2019

VisitEngland has released the latest findings from the Great Britain Tourism Survey which measures the volume and value of overnight tourism within Great Britain. The data relates to domestic trips that were completed during the month of July 2019. The latest figures reveal that when looking on domestic overnight trips within England during July:

Across all trip purposes combined, compared to July 2018, the number of overnight visits decreased by 5% to 9.8 million in July 2019. The value of these trips decreased by 6% in nominal terms to £2.2 billion. The number of domestic overnight nights also decreased by 12%, to 32.6 million.

Domestic Overnight Holidays

Number of Trips: Decreased by 11% compard to July 2018 to 5.3 million trips - reflecting the 2nd consecutive month of annual decline. However, this is the highest level since August 2018.

Bednights: Decreased by 12% to 21 million nights.

Expenditure / Value: Decreased by 5% to £1.5 billion - reflecting the 3rd consecutive month of annual decline.

The average per person expenditure on domestic overnight holidays so far in 2019 stands at £232, down from £240 for the same period of last year, with an average length of stay of 3.12 nights compared with 3.30 for the equivalent period of 2018.

So compared to July 2018, less people are going on domestic overnight holidays within England, are staying for a shorter length of time and are spending less money.

Domestic Business Trips

Number of Trips: Increased by 15% compared to July 2018 to 1.3 million trips.

Bednights: Decreased by 3% to 2.7 million nights.

Expenditure / Value: Decreased by 16% to £264 million.

So compared to July 2018, more people are going on domestic overnight   business trips within England, but they are staying for a shorter length of time and are spending less money.

Domestic Trips to Visit Friends and Relatives

Number of trips: Increased by 8% compared to July 2018 to 3 million trips.

Bednights: Decreased by 9%  to 8.6 million nights.

Expenditure / Value: Increased by 5% to £400 million.

So compared to July 2018, more people are going on domestic overnight trips within England to visit friends and relatives. Although they are staying for a shorter length of time, they are spending more money.
